History of Blackburn

Throughout the Middle Ages, Lancashire was a poor county with few cities. At the time, Blackburn was nothing more than a hamlet. However, by the 16th century, Blackburn had grown into a small market town. It hosted yearly fairs as well as weekly markets (in those days fairs were like markets but they were held only once a year and people came from all over Lancashire to attend a Blackburn fair). Since 1514, Blackburn has also had a grammar school.

Then, in the late 18th century, with the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the cotton industry, Blackburn boomed. At the time of the first census in 1801, Blackburn had a population of about 11,000 people.

As Blackburn grew, a considerable number of new homes were built. Poor people have long lived in tiny, crammed quarters that would be terrifying to us. A typical house in the late 1800s included four rooms: two bedrooms upstairs and below, a front kitchen and living room, and a back scullery. In working-class dwellings, bathrooms were uncommon, and toilets were commonly shared with neighbours.

However, Blackburn’s amenities developed over the eighteenth century. Since 1803 Improvement Commissioners have had the ability to pave and clean Blackburn’s streets, and the streets have been lighted by gas since 1819.
